College reading, writing, and critical thinking with a major research component. Reading, writing, and research assignments are based predominantly on non-fiction texts.

Course theme: James Baldwin and the Language(s) of Social Justice. This section of 1A is linked to 1AS, a support course that offers additional class time and an assigned tutor. These combined 6 units are time-intensive and also high-support. Both sections MUST be added together. This class requires the use of Canvas with no required in-person meetings.
