Free Adult Education Courses and Programs Throughout the City

Most adult education classes at City College are free of charge. City College offers a range of classes to help you gain the skills to improve your life. From English as a Second Language (ESL) to citizenship preparation to high school diploma programs to career and technical training, adult education courses are offered at locations throughout the City.

It’s never too late to finish high school and expand your opportunities. Take Reading, Writing and/or Math classes to strengthen your skills in reading, writing, basic arithmetic, computer literacy, and life skills. The courses you will take in this program include pre-GED®/HiSet® (High School Equivalency Test) classes in the five subject areas on the GED®/HiSet® test.

Transitional Studies Department

Take free English classes to help you work and live in San Francisco.

Take noncredit ESL classes to prepare for the U.S. citizenship test. In these classes, you will practice English questions and answers for the test.

Citizenship Classes

Be ready to respond to an increasingly tight job market by providing the technological and business communication skills required in the workplace. Noncredit certificates are available in Accounting, Business Office Technology and Computer Applications, and Small Business.

Business Department

Prepare for entry-level job positions.

Custodial Training - Prepare for entry-level employment as a custodian.
Culinary Arts & Hospitality - Earn a Short-term and/or one-year certificate in an introduction to culinary fundamentals, culinary and service skills, and baking and pastry. Classes are taught through a combination of lecture and hands-on training in the Educated Palate restaurant at the Downtown Center or at facilities at the Chinatown/North Beach center. These courses prepare you for entry-level work in a restaurant and hotel kitchens and dining rooms.
Home Health Aide - Short term courses to help you deepen your knowledge on Home Health Care, housekeeping, good nutrition, and meal planning procedures to prepare you to provide Home Health Care for the frail elderly.

Our pre-apprenticeship programs prepare you to meet the basic qualifications for entry into one or more registered apprenticeship programs. Learn basic technical skills and job-readiness skills for a designated occupation or sector, to prepare you for registered apprenticeship training.

Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Individualized Courses designed to help adults with disabilities develop skills to reach their academic and personal goals. Courses include job Search Skills, Vocational Exploration, Financial Literacy, Communication, Accessible Arts & Crafts, Computer Essentials, and more.

Classes for Adults with a Disability

The Child Development and Family Studies department offers a variety of noncredit classes and series designed for parents, guardians, and Foster Parents.

Foster and Kinship Care Education: Classes for foster parents offered in the community in collaboration with the San Francisco Department of Human Services.
Parent & Infant and Parent & Child Classes: Adult education classes designed for parents and children at 15 sites throughout the City.
Parenting Series for Parents and Guardians: Lectures for parents and guardians on a wide range of parenting topics.
Positive Parenting Classes - Classes for meeting court-mandated parenting education requirements.
