SFMOMA and CCSF Joint Statement
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and City College of San Francisco (CCSF) are pleased to share that they have reached a settlement regarding the deinstallation and return of Diego Rivera’s Pan American Unity to CCSF’s campus. The settlement is the result of a positive, collaborative effort by SFMOMA and CCSF’s board leadership and includes essential cost-sharing to support the complex work involved in moving the fragile 30-ton, 22-foot-high-by-74-foot-long mural. With this agreement, both SFMOMA and CCSF have determined to withdraw their respective pending litigation.
SFMOMA and CCSF are delighted to move forward in the final phase of their historic partnership, which since 2017, has included the deinstallation, transportation, restoration, conservation, and public exhibition of this significant work. Since its installation in SFMOMA's free, street-level Roberts Family Gallery in June 2021, more than half a million people have visited the monumental mural, celebrating its status as a community treasure and one of San Francisco's most important works of public art. SFMOMA and CCSF are proud of the work they have done together over the past seven years to ensure the public’s ongoing enjoyment of Pan American Unity and the positive and collaborative conclusion of the project.
