Instructor Bio

Anne Cassia has been teaching full-time at CCSF for over a decade.

After earning a BA in English from UCLA, she then went into social work, working with homeless young adults in San Francisco for over ten years through various programs.  During the end of that time, she returned to school at SFSU to earn an MA in English Literature along with Certificates in Teaching Composition and in Teaching Post-Secondary Reading. She taught part-time at SFSU, Merritt College, Ohlone College, and CCSF before being hired full-time in 2010.

  She has always had a commitment to social justice, both in and out of the classroom. 

She is a Bay Area native, born and raised in Oakland, currently living in Richmond and was raised speaking Spanish as well as English (for complicated reasons as neither of her parents were native speakers). 

She teaches English because it's all about empowerment, empowering the student.  Because if she can help you to deal with texts, giving you some strategies, that means the world is open to you.  And if she can help you express yourself in a way that will convince others of your views, you can have power in this world.  

When not teaching, she spends time with her dog, hiking and walking mostly.  Though in 1A she teaches non-fiction, she mostly reads fiction, ranging from Young Adult fantasy to historical fiction to really just about anything with a good story.
